Student Athlete Insurance

Student athlete insurance from Prime Insurance Company offers customized coverage to student athletes in high school and in college. It will give the athletes and their families peace of mind through our personal liability and TRU Umbrella policy that is tailored to their specific needs.

We listed a variety of coverages above but in addition to those listed, we can provide an insurance plan to cover your client’s work, home, and play areas of exposure. Our TRU Umbrella policies provide excess coverage for other scheduled primary insurance including auto, home, ATVs,  boats, pets, and more. Some coverages may require an additional quote and/or premium.

All the coverages should be designed for 3rd parties, with the exception of the coverage for hazing.

• Self-defense insurance
• Social media issues and school authority to sanction student athletes – We want to be able to defend student athletes who are faced with sanctions over social media postings that the school deems inappropriate or against the athletic code of conduct.
• Alleged sexual harassment, sexual abuse, or molestation
• Retaliation against complainants – If a student/coach/parent voices concern over an alleged Title IX issue, this would protect the person from retaliation for bringing that concern to the attention of the school. An example would be if an athlete was kicked off the team after voicing a concern.
• Title IX and gender equity – Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 is a federal law that states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Sexual harassment is covered under Title IX, as is sex-based discrimination in STEM courses. Another example is discrimination based on pregnancy.
• Transgender policies – Inclusion of transgender athletes in school sports, including that student’s right to privacy, safety, and dignity. This would also be a violation of Title IX if a transgender student were not allowed to participate in a sport.
• Pregnancy – An example would be that student athletes can’t be penalized because of pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, childbirth, or related conditions. These students must be afforded the same treatment as any other student with a temporary disability.
• Hazing – To help if the person is being hazed.
• Constitutional rights of student athletes – A student athlete suspended for inappropriate criticism of a coach, or a suspension for attendance at a party where alcohol is served, suspension for failing a drug test, suspension for misbehavior, and a suspension alleged to be more severe than that given to other students for the same offense are some examples that can violate constitutional rights.
• Liability for sports injuries
• Concussion management & return to play protocols – All 50 states and the District of Columbia now have a sports concussion law in place. Most of the state laws contain three common tenets: 1) any athlete suspected of having sustained a concussion must immediately be removed from play; 2) the athlete may not be returned to action the same day; and 3) the athlete may be returned to action only after written clearance is provided by a licensed health-care professional (the definition of which varies widely from state-to-state).
