The Importance of Insurance for Zipline Courses

Zipping through the air attached to a line with a harness. What could be more thrilling… or more risky? For zip line operators, the thrill of the adventure is the selling point, drawing in patrons who want to soar. But that thrill and adventure pose a problem when it comes to securing insurance for many operators. Ziplining is a risky activity, which means insurance for zip line courses is both critical and hard to find.

As with any risky activity, this can be a tough exposure to cover. As an insurance producer, you want to ensure your clients get the protection they need to keep doing business. That is where Prime Insurance Company comes in, offering zipline liability insurance even when a client has been declined or canceled in the past.

We can offer specialty liability insurance for risks like zip-lining because we are willing and able to find solutions. We work in partnership with both the potential insured and the producer, getting to know the specifics of the risk and how to mitigate it. We understand why some insurers decline coverage, but we’ve designed our in-house partnership approach to overcome those barriers and allow you to write more business.

The Risks of Zipline Courses

While we work hard to provide insurance for specialty and tough risks, we do so with a full understanding of the conditions that make coverage a challenge. Our in-house risk management team conducts assessments and on-site visits with clients to fully comprehend how their operations work and suggest changes. This effort ensures we know the risks of zip line courses and the potential exposure via lawsuits.

Safety instructions and following those protocols is critical but may not be enough to avoid incidents and resulting lawsuits. For example, in Reno, an adventure park that includes zip lining is facing a lawsuit claiming negligence after a young boy fell from the ride. The lawsuit alleges the park employees did not strap the child in properly, resulting in a broken heel. The company’s counter is that the child was not following safety instructions.

That lawsuit calls training and supervision into question as well, another concern for operators. In Florida, another lawsuit alleges employees failed to check or secure a child’s harness which led to a 20-foot fall onto the cement.

Similar lawsuits have occurred in Colorado, including one in which a woman suffered a concussion, traumatic brain injury, knee fractures, and other bruises, cuts, and injuries. Many of these lawsuits and fines are the result of malfunctioning brake equipment or patrons failing to use brakes. In some cases, operators are not holding a proper permit from the state. Lawsuits seek damages for pain, permanent injury, and mental anguish, which can add up to a hefty cost for operators.

Zipline liability insurance provides protection, including general liability, professional liability, and excess liability. These coverage lines help operators handle any lawsuits without paying out of pocket for legal defense, medical costs, or other claims of damage. For any of your clients operating in risky businesses, insurance may stand between them and financial ruin.
